Sequel to roads scandal

SUSPENDED North West department of public works, roads and transport head Nic van Staden and his chief financial officer Kwekwu Odami-Takyi - fingered in the multi-million roads project scandal - have been charged with gross misconduct.

SUSPENDED North West department of public works, roads and transport head Nic van Staden and his chief financial officer Kwekwu Odami-Takyi - fingered in the multi-million roads project scandal - have been charged with gross misconduct.

The department suspended the duo on December 14 after the appointment of forensic firm PriceWatershouseCoopers to probe patterns of expenditure and procurement procedures in the appointment of consultants and contractors by the roads directorate.

The roads directorate had reportedly depleted - by 100percent - their allocated budget of R525million in the first three months of the 2008-09 financial year.

Departmental spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe said yesterday: "The accused will each answer to four charges (of misconduct) when they appear before the disciplinary committee in Mafikeng on February 22.

"Four days are scheduled for the hearings, which will be chaired by independent senior counsels."
