Nigeria produces insufficient power

NIGERIA produces just 2700 megawatts of electricity, less than half of last year's targeted figure and woefully inadequate for its 150million people.

NIGERIA produces just 2700 megawatts of electricity, less than half of last year's targeted figure and woefully inadequate for its 150million people.

Hussein Labo, chief of the Power Holding Comany of Nigeria, said last week that gas supplies to four power stations had ceased, affecting output.

Nigeria's inadequate power production has been further hit by inefficiency, theft, losses during transmission and rebel attacks on oil pipelines which affect gas supplies to electricity plants.

Businesses run mainly on diesel-powered generators while most Nigerians go for days, even weeks, without power.

Last year, Nigeria produced an average of 3700 megawatts. South Africa produces more than 43000 megawatts of electricity for a population a third the size of Nigeria. - Sapa-AFP
