Metro police bust bogus 'traffic cop'

JOHANNESBURG Metro police have arrested a man for impersonating a traffic officer on Saturday night.

JOHANNESBURG Metro police have arrested a man for impersonating a traffic officer on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old man allegedly had blue lights attached to his VW Golf and was attempting to pull a female motorist off the road near the Columbine off-ramp on the M1 south.

"Officers patrolling the highway noticed blue strobe lights going on and off," Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said.

"They also realised that he was trying to flag down a young female driver."

Minnaar said when police stopped the man they realised that he was young and nervous.

"He was wearing a bullet- proof vest but when police asked for his appointment card he did not have one," Minnaar said.

He said the man would not explain what he was up to, or where he got the vest and blue lights from.

"He refused to speak to the police officers so was arrested on the spot and taken to Booysens police station for further questioning," Minnaar said.

He warned motorists not to stop unless they were sure they were being stopped by a legitimate police officer.

"Look out for marked cars, proper police uniforms and ask for identification. If you are not sure drive to the nearest police station and report the matter," Minnaar said.

Meanwhile, Sapa reports that a man was hijacked in his friend's driveway in Meyerton by two armed men, one of whom wore a police uniform. Captain Shado Mashobane said the man was driving out of his friend's yard on Springbok Road at 2am yesterday when he was approached by the men.

They ordered him out of his white Mercedes-Benz, registration XPW373GP, and drove off in the vehicle. The man was unharmed. Mashobane said police were still looking for the men and the vehicle.
