MANCHESTER - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admits he was delighted to hear that Rio Ferdinand has been named England captain after John Terry was axed by Fabio Capello.
United defender Ferdinand took over the captaincy on Friday after England coach Capello stripped Terry of the armband following newspaper allegations that the Chelsea star, a married father of two, had an affair with the former girlfriend of international teammate Wayne Bridge.
Ferdinand is promoted from vice-captain and follows in the footsteps of other United players such as Gary Neville, Bryan Robson, David Beckham and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Ferguson said: "It's great for United to have one of our players captaining his country." Meanwhile, United stormed to the top of the League table after a 5-0 demolition of Portsmouth at Old Trafford on Saturday. They moved a point clear of previous leaders Chelsea after goals from Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov and three Portsmouth own goals. The floodgates opened in the 40th minute when Darren Fletcher crossed into the six-yard box and Rooney pounced to direct a header past David James.
Rooney's 23rd goal in all competitions equalled his best total for a single season and United put the result beyond doubt five minutes later when Vanden Borre deflected Nani's cross past James. Another own goal increased United's lead in the 59th minute as Richard Hughes turned Michael Carrick's shot into his own net.
Berbatov added a fourth in the 62nd minute and Pompey defender Marc Wilson scored his side's third own goal seven minutes later.
Elsewhere, Dirk Kuyt boosted 10-man Liverpool's bid to land a Champions League place as his header clinched a crucial 1-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Rafa Benitez's side had Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, while The Toffees' midfielder Steven Pienaar was also dismissed. Tottenham and Aston Villa drew 0-0. Hull climbed out of the bottom three with a 2-1 win against Manchester City. Burnley also moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over West Ham.
