THE raging Tshwane-Pretoria debate refers. With all our European place names, South Africa could easily be mistaken for a European country.
No doubt there is merit in Africanising place names. Hundreds of towns were named after overseas towns for no apparent historical reasons and seemingly with imperialistic motives.
Examples are Orkney, Newcastle, East London, Parys, Heidelberg, Bethlehem and many others. Change them. Give them meaningful South African names. It will hardly offend any true South African.
But some towns were named after people who made significant contributions. Examples are Vereeniging, Bothaville and Pretoria. Don't change these meaningful names.
