This after the institution's management applied for a court interdict to force the Msunduzi municipality to restore the supply.

The reconnection means that water at Plessislaer Further Education and Training College and Sukuma High School in Imbali will also be restored.

The three institutions, owing a combined R14million for water, were connected to the same water meter and have been without water since last week.

The DUT matter was scheduled to be heard in Pietermaritzburg but the legal teams reached an agreement before the matter went to court.

The lawyers from both sides agreed that the water would be restored with immediate effect.

The municipality suspended the water supply after the department of education failed to pay a bill amounting to R14million.

DUT executive director Reggie Ngcobo said their legal team agreed with municipal representatives to reconnect the water.

He said they had been sharing water with neighbouring schools for a long time, and that the account is for the attention of the department of education.

Ngcobo said students could return to campus now that the water supply has been reconnected.

"We appeal to students to come back to continue with registration and lectures will commence on Monday."

Education Department spokesperson Mbali Thusi said they were concerned about the situation.

"We were worried about the disruption of learning and teaching but the department had paid for the FET College and Sukuma.

"We hope that everything will be in order again," she said.

Thusi said there were meetings between the department and municipality from last week to find an amicable solution.

"It appears that the FET College, Sukuma High School and DUT had been using one water meter," she added.
