LECTURES at Mangosuthu University of Technology are expected to get under way on Monday.

Yesterday management and students were locked in discussions after violent clashes on Wednesday between striking students and the police led to the arrest of six students.

The police maintained a watchful eye on developments on the campus. Students went on the rampage on Tuesday and Wednesday. The police retaliated with rubber bullets when students threw stones at the police and security guards.

Student representative council spokesperson Xolani Gcaba said they decided to let the students stay away from campus and to let the negotiation process continue.

He said they would have a briefing on Monday to appraise students of the outcome of the talks.

"We decided to let the students stay at home because they get shot at when protesting inside the campus," Gcaba said.

"We will meet with management until Friday (today) to find a resolution to the grievances."

Police spokesperson Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said the police would remain on campus over the weekend and on Monday, until everyone's safety is ensured.

University spokesperson Bheki Hlophe confirmed that talks between students and management were under way.

"The talks will continue today (yesterday) as certain issues remain unresolved," Hlophe said.

Students' grievances include poor accommodation and fee increases being implemented without consultation. They also want dean of students Thami Mchunu fired.

Meanwhile, the situation at the Durban University of Technology has returned to normal with lectures continuing as usual.
