"Yesterday police responded to information about a gang operating in the Thornville area. At 2.30pm police cornered the gang in the Bainesfield area.
"Three men got out of a vehicle and opened fire on police officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded two of the men, seriously injuring the third," Superintendent Jay Naicker said.
He said three firearms were found on the men and the vehicle they were travelling in was reported stolen in Howick.
"These three men were wanted for robbery, hijacking, and theft."
