'Cops failed to launch a search'

THE Seethe family in Magatle village has accused local police of failing to mount a search for a young relative feared to have drowned.

THE Seethe family in Magatle village has accused local police of failing to mount a search for a young relative feared to have drowned.

John Seethe fell into the Flag Boshielo Dam on Monday but the family says the police in the Sekhukhene region have still not tried to recover his body.

Seethe was in the company of three friends when they went to the dam to fetch water.

Limpopo police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba told Sowetan the youth's friends had attempted to rescue him but were unable to do so because he was too heavy for them to drag out of the dam.

"We have dispatched police to help search for him and have opened a missing person case of a missing person," Ramatseba said.

But a relative, Edward Seethe, said: "We have been waiting at the dam since my brother's disappearance but only four police divers came . and they said they did not have the equipment to do their job."

He said they had tried to get help from the office of provincial Police Commissioner Calving Sengani but their pleas went unheard.

"We have lost hope of finding our brother," he said. "We'd hoped to find his body to start funeral arrangements."

The Seethe family said they were grateful to members of the community who had helped in the search.
