BROADWAY musical Dreamgirls , which is at present touring the US, will show up on local stages next year.

After a successful season at Apollo Theatre in New York City, the show will be in South Africa in June next year.

Dreamgirls will thrill theatre lovers at The Teatro, Montecasino, Johannesburg, and Artscape in Cape Town.

The musical tells the story of a young girl in the 1960s. It also explores the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame.

The original Broadway production of Dreamgirls opened in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre and won six Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards.

In 2006 the show was adapted for a motion picture and has since collected many awards. The musical won two Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and two Screen Actor's Guild Awards.

The show featured Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson.

For the local show producers are looking for male and female ensemble dancers, in their late teens to mid-30s. They must be able to sing.

Hazel Feldman, the producer, says the four female and four male principal roles require exceptionally strong "big belt" lead vocals.

The producers will embark on a country wide tour looking for individuals who have the talent.

Auditions start on February 22 at The Bat Centre Dance Studio, Durban. Women will audition between 9.30am and 1pm and men between 2pm and 5pm.

In Joburg auditions will take place for two days at The Teatro, Montecasino, on February 24 and 25. On February 24 the auditions will be open for women only and on February 25 for men.

In Cape Town the auditions will take place at the Artscape Theatre on February 28.
