PARLIAMENT'S higher education portfolio committee chairperson says young South Africans are still being excluded by tertiary institutions.
"I had hoped that in 2010 we would not have problems. You obviously have a number of students being excluded again," Mmabatho Kubayi told Higher Education director-general Mary Metcalfe in a meeting at Parliament yesterday.
Metcalfe told the committee that a team investigating the efficiency of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme had handed in its report to her ministry, which would soon be made public.
She said her ministry would like to increase the amount of aid offered by the scheme but for now, at least the poorest of the poor were being helped.
Meanwhile, DA MP George Boinamo said "most students go to university for the wrong reasons. They would want to run the university".
But Kubayi said student activists could play an important role if they worked together with university management.
