The famed boxer from Limpopo has decided to bolt from Konki's BK Sports stable, where he was allegedly earning R20000 a month with or without a fight. But Ndou refused to confirm or deny the figures. Their contract expires in April next year.
Ndou, who turns 34 in April, has decided to renew his ties with esteemed mentor Nick Durandt, who guided him to stardom until their partnership was cut short in 2004 by a cyst on Ndou's brain.
Ndou won the SA, WBA Intercontinental featherweight, WBC International and WBU super featherweight titles.
They announced their renewed partnership exclusively to Sowetan yesterday.
"This was my own decision," Ndou told Sowetan yesterday. "I told Butityi about this move two weeks ago. He does not have a gym here in Johannesburg, so I have to train by myself and this is not on.
"Look, God gave me a second chance to box, so I have to grab it with both hands and make money quickly and fulfil my dream of fighting at home once before I retire for good."
Konki said it was news to him that Ndou had rejoined Durandt. "Phillip mentioned trainers Elias Tshabalala and Gert Strydom as his preferred trainers. I met him last week and he said he was going back to Nick but he later sent me an SMS saying he would join Gert and I did not have a problem with that," Konki said.
Sowetan is in possession of Ndou's SMS to Konki about Strydom. Durandt said he could not close the gate on his lost son.
"We are a family," he said. "We were one hell of a team. Phillip will honour his contractual obligation with Konki until April next year."
Konki caused a stir when he announced after signing Ndou in 2008 that his charge would earn R20 000 a month, "with or without" a fight. Konki's other charges, Simphiwe Vetyeka and Zolani Tete, are alleged to be earning around R10000 a month.
