11 KILLED IN 4-CAR PILE-UP

TWO of the 11 people who died in a horrific accident involving four vehicles, including two minibus taxis, in Groblersdal in Limpopo have been positively identified.

But the name only one of them can be published since relatives of the other victims have not yet been notified.

The one victim was identified as Jarios Matlala, 27, a passenger in one of the taxis. He was on his way to work at a mine in Groblersdal.

The accident took place at about 5.30pm on Sunday in Olive Street. It involved two taxis, a bakkie and a delivery van.

Nine people died on the scene and two of the victims were admitted to a local hospital where they later died.

The accident occurred when the driver of the bakkie apparently tried to overtake a taxi while the delivery van was approaching from the opposite direction.

The driver of the van swerved, trying to avoid colliding with the bakkie, but smashed into the oncoming taxi that the bakkie was trying to overtake.

Another taxi came from behind and rammed into the three vehicles.

No one died in either the second taxi or the bakkie.

Eight passengers in the first taxi and three in the van died, including the driver.

The driver of the delivery van is believed to be from Dennilton, though he cannot be named pending his family being informed.

Yesterday MEC for roads and transport in Limpopo Pinkie Kekana visited the St Ritas Hospital in Nebo, where the bodies of the victims were kept.

Kekana also met Johannes Matlala, Jarios' father, to offer support to the bereaved family.

"We looked up to my son to raise his two kids in a fatherly manner. And now this. It is really painful," Matlala said yesterday.

Provincial department of roads and transport spokesperson Wisani Ngobeni said unsafe overtaking was thought to have been the cause of the accident, but an investigation was still under way.
