NEWLY crowned Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) sportsman of the year, Mbulaeni "Bullet" Mulaudzi has set his sights on smashing the national 800m record of 1:42.69 this year.
The record was set by Atlanta Olympics silver medallist, Hezekiel "Tokkie" Sepeng in Brussels, Belgium, 11 years ago on September 3.
"That record has been there for a long time, it's on top of the list of things to achieve this year and I'm going to break it," said Mulaudzi, who finished second to German Robin Schembera at the Aviva International meet in Scotland on Saturday.
Schembera came in at 1:48.55 with Mulaudzi clocking 1:49.45.
"I feel I have achieved almost everything in athletics, bar winning an Olympic gold medal and being a national record holder at senior level," Mulaudzi said .
"I don't want to set a date to break the 800m record but I will do it in the first part of this year."
Mulaudzi will use the Yellow Pages series in Port Elizabeth on February 19 as part of his preparations for the World Indoor Games in Qatar next month.
"After winning a silver medal at the World Indoor Games in 2000, I want to go for gold. There is no more space for silver medals in my house," Mulaudzi said.
"It's going to be a hectic programme this year because there are three major international events, the World Indoor Games, African Senior Championships and Commonwealth Games.
"The African Senior Championships will be used to select an African team to participate in the World Cup, I also want to be part of that event."
Mulaudzi won a gold medal at the World Championships in Germany in August. He said it was an honour to be named the CGA Sportsman of the Year.
Lebohang Phalula won the sportswoman of the year award. The other winners are: Jeffrey Gwebu (most promising senior male athlete); Mpho Mabuza {most promising senior female); Michael van Aswagen (most promising junior athlete), and Anri Steyn (most promising female athlete).
