IFP leadership dispute turns ugly as six are attacked

IT WAS a night of the long knives as IFP leaders tried to tighten the screws around those openly supporting party national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi.

IT WAS a night of the long knives as IFP leaders tried to tighten the screws around those openly supporting party national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi.

Leaders of Ulundi municipality, led by mayor Mvuseni Luthuli, cooperate service manager Toti Zulu and municipal manager Angela Buthelezi, tried to stop prayers organised by a group known as Friends of Magwaza-Msibi (VZ). Buthelezi is IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi's daughter.

And yesterday six people were allegedly assaulted after the prayers in a giant marquee at Ulundi Park. It is alleged people wearing Friends of VZ T-shirts were confronted by other IFP members who attacked them.

Friends of VZ spokesperson Zamani Nene said their members were attacked by IFP members in Ulundi after the prayers.

"We do not know why people are being attacked and harassed for wearing Friends of VZ T-shirts.

"They were attacked by people who were in a car with posters of president Mangosuthu Buthelezi."

Nene said they had organised prayers to "ask God to give Magwaza-Msibi wisdom".

"The prayers have nothing to do with politics but as IFP supporters we have noticed that Magwaza-Msibi is being abused, even by the national executive council," said Nene.
