Jomo welcomes goal fest

BAFANA Bafana's renewed appetite for goals augurs well for South Africa's quest for glory during the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals in June.

BAFANA Bafana's renewed appetite for goals augurs well for South Africa's quest for glory during the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals in June.

This is according to South African soccer icon Jomo Sono after Bafana rattled the net nine times in two games against Swaziland and Zimbabwe.

In the first game last Saturday, Bafana hammered Swaziland's Isihlangu 6-2 and went on to score three unanswered goals against the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

"It is good that Bafana Bafana are scoring goals, good for their World Cup preparations. It does not matter who they were playing against in the two games," Sono said.

"Even if it were in a Sunday league match, scoring goals helps in terms of building confidence in the team. It helps players to believe in themselves.

"If you look at Gert Schalkwyk, he is scoring goals for Bafana Bafana. I hope the players who are doing well will not be left out of the squad," Sono said.

He said five months was enough for coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to put together the strongest possible Bafana squad: "In 1998, as caretaker coach I had three weeks to prepare Bafana Bafana for the Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso and we reached the final."
