THE accused in the sugarcane serial killings, Thozamile Taki, who is charged with the murder of 13 women, is expected to appear in the Ramsgate high court today.
Taki, who has pleaded not guilty, is expected to appear with his co-accused and former girlfriend, Thembisile Nene, who is facing 13 charges of robbery.
Taki allegedly tricked women into believing he was an employment agent recruiting people to work at Umzinto.
The communications officer for the regional department of justice, Noma Chiliza, confirmed Taki's court appearance. "Taki will appear in the Ramsgate high court at 9am on Thursday," she said.
It is alleged that all of Taki's victims were female job-seekers between the ages of 20 and 35 years, who lived in areas around Durban and were willing to travel with him to find the promised jobs.
The first 11 bodies were found at the Umzinto sugarcane farm and the other two were later found buried on a tea estate in Eastern Cape.
Taki was arrested after he gave his sister-in-law a cellphone that belonged to one of his victims to pass it to Nene, who was then his girlfriend.
Police traced the sister-in law to KwaDukuza. She in turn took them to Port St Johns, where Taki and his partner were arrested.
