Schumacher might push the F1 needle past 44

FRANKFURT - Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher might extend his Formula One comeback beyond the current three-year contract he has signed with Mercedes.

FRANKFURT - Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher might extend his Formula One comeback beyond the current three-year contract he has signed with Mercedes.

Though he will be 44 years old when the deal expires, Schumacher told Bild newspaper in Germany it might not signal the end of his F1 career.

"It doesn't have to be the end after three years," Schumacher told yesterday's edition of the newspaper.

The three-year contract was Mercedes's idea and it was a sign of confidence, Schumacher said.

He said he was "sure" he would be competitive, though it might be "a little optimistic" to expect him to win the title in his first comeback season.

"But that has to be our target and our motivation," he said.

Schumacher, who won five titles with Ferrari, said the Italian team will always be in his heart.

"I have to watch out not to drive into the red (Ferrari) box when I change tyres," he joked. - Sapa-AP
