Man held over arson attacks

A 41-YEAR-old man was arrested yesterday for his alleged involvement in a series of arson attacks on a headman in Engcobo, Eastern Cape police said.

A 41-YEAR-old man was arrested yesterday for his alleged involvement in a series of arson attacks on a headman in Engcobo, Eastern Cape police said.

"He was found in possession of an R4 rifle with five rounds, and an old rifle that was reported missing from when there were homelands," Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said.

On January 7 a group armed with pangas and knobkerries torched nine houses in Mthintloni belonging to the headman and his family.

Locals accused him of stealing livestock after a missing sheep was found in his kraal.

Police arrested 27 people for the arson. After arriving on the scene, some people in the crowd fired on police before fleeing into the forest.

Fatyela said the 41-year-old man was among those who shot at police. "The firearm was found in a forest near the area."

The man is expected to appear in the Engcobo magistrate's court today. - Sapa
