Khumalo fails to attend his drunken driving trial

SOCCER legend Doctor Khumalo could not attend his drunken driving trial yesterday because he was sick.

Instead, his attorney Johan Pretorius delivered a sick note to the Roodepoort magistrate's court.

Pretorius said: "He is sick and could not come to court. We have asked for a postponement."

He refused to say what was wrong with his client. Khumalo, pictured, will be back in court in May.

The trial had been set down for three days to allow more witnesses to testify.

During Khumalo's last appearance in August, state prosecutor Vincent Machobane said: "There are many witnesses who are still going to testify. They will include a Metro police officer, doctors who treated Khumalo and laboratory officials. Khumalo will also testify after all the witnesses have taken the stand."

Four witnesses - two female passengers, the taxi driver and a paramedic - have already told the court that Khumalo was very drunk on the morning his BMW Z4 crashed into the back of the taxi.

Khumalo was charged with drunken, reckless and negligent driving after an accident that occurred near the Maraisburg Road off-ramp in Johannesburg.

There were no fatalities.
