THE deputy speaker of the Mpumalanga legislature had a narrow escape when the car in which she was travelling and a bakkie collided at Marite near Bushbuckridge on Monday

Violet Siwela was apassenger in a Mercedes- Benz when a bakkie from the opposite direction lost control, resulting in a collision at about 3pm.

After the collision the Mercedes-Benz skidded over a bridge before it came to a complete halt in the bushes a few metres from the notorious R40 road between Hazyview and Bushbuckridge.

No one was injured in the car in which Siwela was travelling, but the driver of the bakkie sustained minor injuries and his bakkie was extensively damaged at the front.

"I don't really know how the accident happened but I thank God no life was lost in the accident," Siwela said before she was taken to Nelspruit Medi-Clinic.

She was treated for shock and later discharged.

Siwela told Sowetan that what happened to her was a wake-up call for every road user to practice extra caution in order to avoid accidents.

Siwela became deputy speaker when Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza took over from former premier Thabang Makwetla, who became deputy minister of defence in the administration of President Jacob Zuma.
