Police ask for help in farm killing

MPUMALANGA police have asked members of the community to help them with information that might lead to the arrest of a gunman or gunmen who killed a farmer and wounded his wife.

Johannes Venter, 64, a rose farmer, was asleep with his wife Rancia, 60, in their house near Middelburg when they were attacked at about 1.30am on Friday.

The couple's 23-year-old son, Jaco Venter, told the police he was awakened by the screams of his parents.

"The son told us he heard his father screaming loudly for help and then the blast of a gun followed," Mpumalamga police spokesman Captaion Leonard Hlathi said.

"His father suddenly became quiet but his mother went on screaming. Another shot went off and she too became quiet."

Hlathi said the man was fatally shot in the head his wife was shot in the left arm.

"She survived and was admitted at a hospital for treatment," Hlathi said.

"Nothing was stolen from the house and the motive for the attack is still unknown."

Anyone with information can contact Senior Superintendent Faan Steenkamp on 082-565-7656 or Hlathi on 082-462-0804.
