THE Mozart Festival Symposium on Music and Exile will be hosted by the Goethe Institute at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown, Johannesburg.
The symposium is an extension of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival and takes place tomorrow and Thursday.
The Mozart anniversary concert, a unique combination of classical performances on the highest international level also takes place tomorrow.
Works of double-exiled composer Friedrich Hartmann, South African composer Michael Moerane (the late uncle of former president Thabo Mbeki) and Mozart will be performed by the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Sanderling.
The festival's creative approach includes an enterprising portfolio of education and outreach projects for children from all corners of society.
One of the organisers, Gilly Hemphill, says: "The topic of exile is of great significance for South African music of the 20th century, as the political situations of apartheid and World War Two, among other things, caused many migrations."
Hemphill says though these themes are universal and allow for a geographically and historically wide-ranging discussion, exile can be seen as a topos of South African cultural, and specifically musical, production.
Tim Jackson, Michael Haas, Stephanus Muller and Mokale Koapeng are among the presenters.
