zambia take revenge

BASETSANA experienced a blip on the road to the Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup on Saturday, but go through to the final round.

The team lost their second leg of the Germany 2010 qualifying match 2-1 to Zambia on a wet pitch in Lusaka, with Bontle Mashilo scoring in the 35th minute. But Basetsana go through to final round of the qualifiers on a 7-2 aggregate, having basically wrapped up the contest two weeks ago in the first leg in Eldorado Park. They won that tie 6-0.

Basetsana face Nigeria's Super Falconets next, and as South Africans know, beating that side has proven to be a tall order over the years.

The Nigerians played Zimbabwe, who they crushed 6-0 in Harare and then 4-0 at home in Abuja on Saturday, ensuring a 10-0 slaughter.

"It is going to be a really tough match. There are 13 players who took part in the last World Cup who are still eligible for this team. That is a lot of experience in one side, but we are confident," said team manager Fran Hilton-Smith.

The Adat Egan side, led by striker Sunday Uchechi, is a formidable force and South Africa will have to pull out all the stops to secure one of the two World Cup spots available for African sides.

Coach Augustine Makalakalane expressed pride in his team despite the loss: "We missed a lot of chances."

"We are ready for Nigeria - it is now or never, so bring them on."

Basetsana will first meet the Falconets at home on February 12-14 weekend, with the second leg scheduled for the February 26-28 weekend in Nigeria.
