THE first phase of the Gautrain - the rapid rail system between Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport - is ahead of schedule and will be completed in May, just in time for the Fifa Soccer World Cup kick-off.

The route between the airport and Sandton could be finished by May 27 - a month ahead of schedule.

This means Gautrain would be integrated into the 2010 transport plans. The world's biggest sporting event runs from June 11 to July 11.

Gautrain's Barbara Jansen said yesterday: "According to our concession plans with Bombela consortium, they were supposed to finish this route at the end of June, but are ahead of schedule.

"The rest of the system has to have been completed by the end of June next year. If it starts operating in May, it will mean that it will carry soccer fans arriving in the country through the airport to Sandton. Each of the 24 trains, and airport coaches, have the capacity to carry 110 passengers."

She said they had not yet agreed on fares, but estimated that it could cost about R80 a single trip.
