Famous Zulu queens to have memorial

AMAFA, the KwaZulu-Natal heritage body, wants to erect two memorials to honour the province's legendary Zulu queens and Zulu regiment leader Mehlokazulu Ka Sihayo, who fought against the British at the battles of Isandlwana, Khambula and Ulundi.

Amafa chief executive Barry Marshall said they were calling for expressions of interest from those interested in designing and constructing the memorials.

Marshall said the role of Zulu kings from the 17th century progenitor Nkosinkulu up to the present day is displayed at the uMngungundlovu multi-media centre and the surrounding eMakhosini Valley of the Kings, which is part of the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park.

"We thought it would be appropriate to honour the Zulu queens who were an integral and important part of royalty and Zulu life.

"Some, like Queen Nandi, mother of King Shaka, are well- known, others less so.

"This memorial will be placed outside the new centre to honour their contribution to the building of the nation and as mothers of successive kings," he said.

The second memorial will commemorate Mehlokazulu Ka Sihayo, who was responsible for one of the justifications for the British invasion of Zululand in 1879. He was killed during the Bhambatha Uprising in 1906.
