Togo goalkeeper on the mend in Joburg

TOGO goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale, who was wounded when gunmen opened fire on their team bus in Angola two weeks ago, is responding well to treatment but remains hospitalised in Johannesburg, a hospital spokesperson said yesterday.

"His condition is stable and he is responding well to treatment," said Erin Smylie, spokesperson for Milpark Hospital, a private facility. She could not say when the 25-year-old goalie might be released from the hospital.

Obilale was shot in the back and abdomen on January 8 when separatist guerrillas in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda opened fire on Togo's convoy as they entered the country to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The team's assistant coach and its squad spokesperson were killed in the shooting, which prompted Togo to withdraw from the competition. - Sapa-AFP
