The covert operation to monitor them will exacerbate violence against women.
Poverty and the high rate of unemployment are some of the reasons women sell their bodies and the city should be creating alternatives for these women (and men) to be able to trade safely.
The city should also engage with sex workers who want to be rehabilitated.
I am ashamed that as a Durbanite, some areas with a n influx of sex trade are also considering employing the same tactics to deal with sex workers where Umbilo residents have to sign documents that if they see sex workers, they should alert the police.
In Morningside it is even worse. A resident uses water to spray sex workers and profane language to scare the girls.
On the forefront of abusing the sex workers are the police themselves. Here in Durban women are forced to pay them up to R200 to avoid arrest and clients are also pressured to pay the police to avoid arrest.
Whether I support this ancient trade is of no consequence because sex workers provide an essential service to men who have their reasons for seeking them out.
Following and taking pictures of sex workers and clients is also an infringement on their privacy. Unfortunately such a move does not end with sex workers. Street kids and the homeless are always victimised by communities and the police.
Leave sex workers alone and concentrate on providing clean water and sanitation, electricity and housing and creating jobs for your constituents.
