GOSPEL singer Joyce Zolelwa Keetse's debut album, His Eyez on the Sparrow, brings the church right into your home.
Born in Eastern Cape in 1969, Keetse uses music to heal wounds of the past.
She says her painful childhood made her a stronger person.
His Eyez on the Sparrow is a simple album with mainly traditional choruses that are known to most people. Nevertheless, if you are looking for an album with revelations and scriptures for every song, this is it.
"I had a terrible childhood." Keetse says. "I went through hell but I am living testimony that God does change your life. My music has helped me heal and I use it to heal others," Keetse says.
Explaining the title track she says: "When I was going through my separation the song gave me hope. I felt it was talking to me."
K eetse has been singing for a long time for various developing groups .
"I used to sing with friends and we imitated Brenda Fassie and other singers. We sang at the mines and people loved our music, but getting a deal was difficult," Keetse says.
She says when she came to Jozi in the early 1990s all she wanted was to be famous. She thought getting a recording deal would be a walk in the park.
"It was difficult. You don't have a place to stay and you don't know where to go to record. I was shocked that you were sometimes expected to use your body to be a star. I would never do that. I went home to finish my studies."
She returned in 1996 when she was more mature.
