LATE ANC leader Peter Mokaba has been honoured with an international soccer tournament to mark the official opening of a 2010 Fifa World Cup Stadium on Saturday.
It will feature Kaizer Chiefs, Absa Premiership kings SuperSport United, BidVest Wits and Denmark giants Brondby.
The Peter Mokaba Soccer Tournament will be played at the new stadium, which is also named after the late former ANC Youth League president.
Amakhosi right back Tlou "Spanner" Molekwane is excited to play in his home town for the first time since turning professional three seasons ago.
"It's a great honour for the team and myself in particular to be part of this historic tournament to officially open a World Cup Stadium," he said.
Molekwane was born and bread in Polokwane.
"We want to maintain shape so that when the league resumes after the Africa Cup of Nations, we have not lost the winning rhythm. Our eyes are still on the championship title, football is a game of surprises. We also hoping for some favours from other teams."
Molekwame was part of the Chiefs' team that beat Black Leopards 3-2 in Eldorado Park on Saturday. Chiefs start the Polokwane tournament with a game against United at noon. Bidvest Wits welcome Brondby in the first match at 10am.
The final will be played on the same date starting at 5pm.
Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung said: "We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in an event to open the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
"The leaders of Polokwane are using the tournament an opportunity for the province to test its preparation ahead of the World Cup."
