'Evictions are illegal'

SOME residents of Itireleng, near Laudium, outside Pretoria, were evicted without a court order, the Azanian People's Organisation claimed yesterday.

SOME residents of Itireleng, near Laudium, outside Pretoria, were evicted without a court order, the Azanian People's Organisation claimed yesterday.

"This refers to evictions in portion 25 of the farm Mooiplaats," Azapo's Gauteng chairperson Samore Herbstein said.

The Anti-Privatisation Forum was yesterday meeting lawyers to draft an urgent application to the Pretoria high court to force the government to provide housing to those evicted.

Herbstein claimed the sheriff of the court, the City of Tshwane, police and Tshwane metro police at the scene refused or failed, since Tuesday, to provide the court order to either Azapo or the attorney hired by residents.

"We call on the police to ensure that the property of residents of portion 25 of Mooiplaats, including their roof sheeting, be returned to them."

He said when the residents were evicted on Monday, the sheriff had a court order for portion 15, not for portion 25.

"Azapo calls on residents to return to their homes until the city provides proof that the evictions were legal." - Sapa
