MELBOURNE - Though the weather conditions improved, both Leon Knoll, who carded 83, and JG Claassen (79) struggled through the second round of the NEC Master of the Amateurs Championship played at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.

South Africa's top-ranked amateur, 19-year-old Leon Knoll, played his second round 10 shots worse than his first to record a 36-hole total of 156, 12 over par. This puts him well down the field in 33rd place.

JG Claassen, the 18-year-old North West Province amateur, did a little better, but by his standards is bound to be disappointed with his seven-over-par second round. His 36-hole total is 155, 11 over par, finishing one position better than his fellow countryman.

The day belonged to Bud Cauley of the US. The 19-year-old Florida native, ranked sixth on the latest world amateur rankings, enjoying the cooler weather conditions, broke the course record with a round of 65, seven under par. He shot up the leader board to just two shots off the pace, recording a 36-hole score of 141, three under par. Kieran Pratt from Melbourne, who shot 72, leads with a 36-hole total of 139, five under par.

In the international team competition in which two players from the same country compete, Australia managed to hold on to their lead, finishing on 286, two under par.

South Africa recorded a disappointing second-round score of 162, 18 over par, to drop from third place overnight to sixth. - Sapa
