THE Nhlangwini clan in Highflats, southern KwaZulu-Natal, has signed a multi-billion rand development deal with American investors.

THE Nhlangwini clan in Highflats, southern KwaZulu-Natal, has signed a multi-billion rand development deal with American investors.

The clan, under Inkosi Melizwe Dlamini, signed the R1,1billion deal with the US department of agriculture to improve the lives of the rural community.

The deal aims to develop the area into a tourism paradise.

Unveiling the development deal at the Ekujuleni Royal Residence in Durban north this week, Dlamini said investors planned to build a shopping complex in the Ophepheni area.

He said job opportunities would be created for his people.

"We don't want people who come to the clan to make money and leave the people poor," Dlamini said

"We agreed with the Americans that we need real investment that brings development that will change our people's lives."

Dlamini said not only his clan members would benefit but the entire province.

"It's a development of the province. Once the mall is completed there will be suitable jobs. During the construction phase many people will be employed.

"We have agreed with the investors that our people should own businesses in the project.

"We want a massive economy unlike black economic empowerment where few people benefit."

He said development in his area would be in line with the government's agenda to improve the lives of the poor.

"We are pleased by the move and the fact that the developer had received blessings from Premier Zweli Mkhize."

He said the development would include a private hospital and a business district in phase three of the project.
