MBAQANGA group Impumelelo deserve a big round of applause for keeping the genre alive despite the challenges in the performing arts.
After so many years in the music field, Impumelelo are still going strong and producing good music. Though mbaqanga was not doing well commercially, the group kept the music alive.
Impumelelo have just released their 14th album, Isikweletu. Made up of Sicelo Dladla and Nkosinathi Moses Ngwenya, the group worked with one of the best mbaqanga producers, Moses Ngwenya of Soul Brothers.
Their music is a nice balance between themes such as love and spirituality.
"Our music focuses on real issues. Most of our songs are inspired by our personal experiences. We look at issues affecting the youth and issues that many people can relate to," Ngwenya says.
The music is composed jointly by both men. Ngwenya says their music has evolved over time.
"We have been around a long time so our sound has developed. Now and again, we incorporate different instruments to keep our sound fresh."
Impumelelo was formed as Imitshotshovu, operating under the umbrella of Soul Brothers. After releasing four albums under Imitshotshovu, in 1998 they changed their name to Impumelelo. They launched their new name with Abelungu, which sold 150000 copies.
