THE 2010 Piggs Peak Night Racing Season got under way at Greyville on January 2 and continues next Tuesday, when the first proper night race meeting at Turffontein, Phumelela's flagship racing venue, will be held.

The new lights at Turffontein were used for the first time at the day-night Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile race meeting last November and again later that month at the Sansui Summer Cup, which was also a day-night fixture.

Those meetings gave horseracing fans a taste of racing under lights at Turffontein and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with many fans commenting that the venue was particularly suited to night racing.

Last night's meeting at Turffontein was to be the first proper night fixture at the track and many horseracing fans were looking forward to the occasion.

Eight races were carded, with the Listed Swallow Stakes over 1200m heading the programme. Race one went off at 5pm with the last at 9.05pm. - Phumelela
