A PRETORIA North man yesterday tearfully denied being a party to the rape and indecent assault of his former girlfriend's six-year-old daughter.
"I did not do it. I would never in my life do that type of thing. I don't know what she has against me," he told the Pretoria high court.
"It was not my child. I was not even interested in her. We had minimal contact."
The 26-year-old welder and the girl's 39-year-old mother have pleaded not guilty to rape, six charges of indecent assault and three of assault.
In 2005 the mother allegedly helped her boyfriend to rape, sodomise and indecently assault her daughter. The abuse allegedly included the use of branches, dagga and a vibrator on the girl, who was also given sleeping pills.
Medical evidence supported the girl's evidence that she had been sexually abused.
The mother earlier told the court she could not remember anything that happened to her daughter because of her use of sleeping pills and alcohol.
"I don't know what happened. I am sorry. She is telling the truth. It did happen to her. But I was out of it," she testified.
A psychiatric report handed to the court yesterday stated that though the man had borderline intellectual functioning and abused substances, he did not suffer from a mental disorder that affected his ability to appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions and could contribute to his defence.
The man testified that he met the girl's mother in a bar and started a sexual relationship with her because she appeared to have a lot of money "and paid for everything", including his drugs.
Their relationship lasted for about three months, during which he seldom saw her daughter.
They have a son together, currently aged four.
He later realised the woman had a problem with sleeping pills because she would pass out, wet herself and he often could not wake her up.
