FORMER Safa president Molefi Oliphant has been appointed deputy chairperson of the Local Organising Committee for the 27th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Angola.

FORMER Safa president Molefi Oliphant has been appointed deputy chairperson of the Local Organising Committee for the 27th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Angola.

"It's a great honour to serve as one of the supervisors of the Afcon finals, which is one of the big football competitions in the world," Oliphant said.

Oliphant, who is still a board member of the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee, has been appointed head of Benguela, the second-largest city in Angola.

"I will be overseeing the games played in Benguela, basically being in charge of the day-to-day running of all the matches in that city," said Oliphant from Luanda yesterday.

"I will be working closely with the Benguela LOC, general coordinator and the assistant, referees' committee, security, media and medical teams.

"In addition, I will also work with the CAF technical study group, a team of top coaches who have been appointed to analyse the tournament here.

"Protocol people will also be part of the team I will be leading," said Oliphant, a well-respected businessman in the Vaal.

This will be the fourth consecutive Afcon finals in which Oliphant will work for CAF.

During the 2008 tournament in Ghana, he was in charge in the capital Accra.

In 2004 in Tunisia and 2006 in Egypt Oliphant headed Bizerte and Port Said respectively.

For Fifa, Oliphant was an assistant general coordinator in Hanover during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

During the 2002 World Cup, Oliphant served on the appeals board.

Other South Africans working in Angola include Danny Jordaan (LOC), Raymond Hack (disciplinary committee), Victor Ramathesele and Shorti Moola (medical commission).

Referees Jerome Damon and Daniel Bennett, as well as assistant referee Enoch Molefe, are also in Angola.
