THE Mpumalanga provincial government has appointed a man with a dark cloud hanging over his head to the second most powerful position in the province.
Premier David Mabuza has announced that Jacob Moeketsi Rabodila, the suspended Merafong municipal manager, as the province's director-general.
Sowetan has learnt that Rabodila was subjected to a disciplinary hearing as municipal manager for the Merafong municipality.
It was recommended that Rabodila be removed from State corridors and be suspended immediately . Despite this Mabuza has appointed him as the province's D-G.
Mabuza's spokesperson, Mabutho Sithole, confirmed this. Asked whether the provincial government was aware of Rabodila's chequered past when it hired him, Sithole said they were not.
But Rabodila's alleged shenanigans are shrouded in secrecy.
"I can confirm that Rabodila was suspended for misconduct," said Merafong municipal mayor, Papi Molokwane. "But we cannot reveal the nature of the charges."
Sowetan has also learnt from a reliable source that even the ANC deployment committee expressed concern about Rabodila.
The source said Mabuza had not advertised the post but appointed Rabodila himself.
"This despite the fact that a formal selection process had attracted 80 potential candidates."
The controversy started when Mabuza allegedly wanted to appoint one Mike Maile.
Mabuza abandoned the plan after the NIAcouldn't clear Maile's name as it was reportedly linked to the so-called Alexandra Mafia.
