The new public protector says she will leave the dispute over the state capture report prepared by h.
THE mother of a child who was struck against the head by a brick during New Year's Eve celebrations in Hillbrow was negligent and a liar.
The police yesterday arrested her and her boyfriend and charged them with perjury before releasing them with a warning to appear in court on Friday.
The 11-month-old child, Sibusiso Moyo, is reported to be out of danger but still recuperating in the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg.
His mother, Nomalanga Moyo, had originally told the police in a statement that she was standing on a balcony of a block of flats when her child was hit by a brick thrown by revellers during the celebrations.
Captain Bheki Mavundla of the Hillbrow police station said yesterday that Moyo had said she was at Millicent Court on Pretorius Street, when the incident happened.
"But it was discovered during the police investigation that the building was locked and the residents of the flat in question were asleep when the boy was struck.
"We interviewed people in the building and in particular the flat where she claimed to have been. They all gave similar statements - that the couple was never there," said Mavundla.
"Why does she not just tell the truth. Police are determined to effect an arrest and we wanted to establish the direction that the brick may have come from. How can we do that if the scene of the incident is false.
"She has wasted police resources and disappointed the public," said Mavundla.
He said police had now established that the couple were on the streets, somewhere on Twist street, when the baby was struck.
Mavundla said that the couple may have lied in an attempt "to hide their negligence, (incase) something happened to the baby".
Sowetan has established that Moyo shares a flat with her sister in Joubert Park, several blocks from Pretorius Street, where Millicent Court is.
Moyo had told Sowetan that Sibusiso was struck by the brick while she had her boyfriend were crossing a street in Hillbrow.
