Don't make SABC an arm of government again

THE SABC seems to be in more trouble. Its board is up in arms over what they see as the imposition of new chief executive officer Solly Mokoetle.

Normally the board appoints its chief executive, so what is happening ? Why was the same procedure not followed? Is there more to this than meets the eye?

The chief executive reports directly to the board but, ironically, Mokoetle stated publicly that he would report directly to Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda.

He also said he would not be accountable to the board but to a government minister, thereby turning the SABC into an arm of government. Have we not learnt from our past mistakes?
