The former Portuguese colony is still a beautiful country with some of the best beaches, coral reefs and turquoise waters in Africa, and though it is still being redeveloped, tourism is on the rise.
Resorts have sprung up along the marvellous coastline and some islands, like Bazaruto, have very good, if expensive, lodges with picture-postcard surroundings of crystal-clear waters, palm trees and secluded white beaches.
Mozambique is still pretty much a travel destination for the independent traveller who wants to explore areas where very few Europeans have ever ventured or for those who can afford to fly between various resorts.
