IT WAS babies galore on New Year's Day. Though only four of the nine provinces had figures by yesterday, 611 births were confirmed in Western Cape, Limpopo, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Limpopo topped the 2010 New Year's Day baby list with 248 babies. Western Cape followed closely at 213 and KwaZulu-Natal recorded 97 births.
The births of fewer than 600 Christmas babies were recorded.
Phuti Seloba, spokesperson for department of health in Limpopo, said: "Of the 248 babies 135 were girls and 113 boys.
"A baby girl was born a second before midnight and another just after midnight."
Western Cape had its first baby born at a minute past noon in George. KwaZulu-Natal saw its first baby born seconds after midnight.
Chris Maxon, spokesperson for department of health in KwaZulu-Natal, said: "There were 49 boys and 48 girls born."
Gauteng could not confirm its figures yesterday as they were still waiting for data. By midday on New Year's Day hospitals around the province had recorded 53 births. This number was expected to increase. See page 12
