New twist in R1,6m robbery

THE R1,6million robbery involving a mayor's cousin at the Bela-Bela municipality has taken a new twist after seven suspects arrested in connection with the crime turned state witnesses.

The seven men are currently assisting police with more information about the matter.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba confirmed yesterday they were still gathering further information from the men and that, depending on the information they were receiving from the men, more arrests were imminent.

One of the suspects, who is a cousin and also personal assistant to Bela-Bela mayor Henrietta Ledwaba, is out on R5000 bail after he was arrested in Gauteng last week.

The man, Elliot Molala, will appear again in court alongside his co-accused Eric Sebela, 28, on January 12. Sebela had been in police custody since his arrest in Thembisa, in Ekurhuleni, onDecember 23.

The men were arrested following an incident on September 5 last year.

This was after a group of men armed with guns allegedly entered the municipal premises and stole an estimated R1,6million.

Six firearms belonging to the municipality's traffic unit were also stolen during the robbery and have not yet been recovered.
