Dark new year for residents

ALEXANDRA and Lombardi East residents in northern Johannesburg are unhappy about going into the new year in darkness.

They have not had electricity since Saturday and complained that this had disrupted their lives.

"At night it is totally dark and it gives criminals a chance to attack," said Alexandra resident Lucas Letsoalo.

"I have bought groceries and budgeted because schools are opening next week. Now this throws me totally off budget," he said.

Yesterday the residents gathered at the Alexandra substation where a fire broke out, causing their misery.

City Power managing director Silas Zimu was on site to establish the cause of the problem. He appealed to the residents to be patient.
