A WATER crisis hit parts of Gauteng at the weekend, leaving residents in Florida on the West Rand being without water since Christmas Day.

Orlando in Soweto last had water on Saturday evening.

Johannesburg Water attributed the water crisis to burst pipes in both Florida and Orlando.

"We are aware of crisis since it was reported to us yesterday (Sunday), Johannesburg Water spokesperson Baldwin Matsemela, said.

"It was due to a burst pipe in Mooki Street, Orlando, and we immediately dispatched our technicians to rectify it."

Technicians were still working on the burst pipe at noon yesterday.

Several Orlando East residents could be seen with water containers from Uncle Tom's Hall. One resident Dimakatso Mosola, 34, said the water crisis made her "feel bad because I have a young child and I have to have water".

Matsemela said there was "no way to estimate when the repairs would be finished".

But he gave the assurance that "two water tankers are driving around the affected areas to assist residents with water".

In Florida, Matsemela said, "certain parts of the area were safe".

"We don't close our offices and there are always technicians on standby for any emergency," he said.
