So intense is the infighting that the region has been declared nonfunctional. The huge split was believed to be a result of the controversial Safa national executive committee elections.

Safa Limpopo provincial representative Lucas Nhlapo confirmed the dissolution of the committee and revealed that he has been mandated by the national office to curate and assist the development of football in the region.

Sowetan is in possession of a letter signed by Safa chief executive Raymond Hack to this effect. There will be no interim committee, with Nhlapo taking sole charge.

"During the assessment process it was discovered that the region was dysfunctional due to factionalism," said Nhlapo, who is also the chairperson of the national dispute resolution committee.

"I've been mandated to assume control over the administration of the region with immediate effect. I've also been tasked to facilitate the process of the local football associations (LFAs) in the region and to convene a regional annual general meeting before the end of March," he said.

"We have discovered that members of the regional executive committee were invited selectively to meetings and the LFAs were disadvantaged as a result. Some of the LFAs were also excluded in the selection of the regional Under-12, -14 and -15 teams. But all this is about to change."
