THE Bakwena ba Mogopa are mourning the death of Paramount Chief Sponkane Ivan David Mosiah. He was crowned chief in June 2008.
Mosiah was born on May 26 1936, the eldest of six children born to John Ntlai, a former chief inspector for education in Tlhabane, and Winnifred Bo-Motshwanetse Mosiah, the only child of the late Paramount Chief Johnny Otto Motsile Mamogale.
On June 18 2008 the Bakwena-ba-Mogopa royal family decided to do away with the principle of male primogeniture (the right of an eldest son by being heir) and as a result restored the chieftaincy of the tribe to the descendants of Bo-Motshwanetse.
As the eldest child of Bo-Motshwanetse he was appointed paramount chief of Bakwena-ba-Mogopa.
Mosiah completed his BSc degree at Fort Hare University in 1962.
He was a teacher, lecturer and technician all his life and always involved in education, especially the sciences.
Over the years he taught at Bafokeng High School in Rustenburg in 1963 and at St Christopher's in Mbabane, Swaziland, from 1967 to 1977, where he left as headmaster at the end of 1977.
Mosiah was an important member of the Trevor Huddleston Band.
He is survived by his wife Nontu, sister Naledi, brother Percy, his four children and three grandchildren.
