ZAKUMI, the 2010 Fifa World Cup mascot, is set to dazzle fans and music lovers at this year's 7th MTN Durban Jazz Festival at Hazelmere Dam outside Verulam on Saturday.
The organisers have called on those who will attend the festival to show support for Bafana Bafana by wearing the national team jersey and carrying the South African flag.
The local performers are Dorothy Masuku, Caiphus Semenya, Ringo Madlingozi, Sipho "Hostix" Mabuse and Harare, the African Drum Beat, and soul musicians including Joe Nina, Theo Kgosinkwe, and the electrifying Thandiswa Mazwai.
There will also be Sama award winner Lira, Ntokozo Masinga, Busi Mhlongo and African Jazz Pioneers.
Touch Africa brand development manager Wanita Ngcobo said this year's event would be bigger and better than previous years.
"Patrons can bring their camp chairs, braai stands, cooler boxes, umbrellas, family and friends to enjoy the scenery, music and boat and helicopter rides around the dam," Ngcobo said.
"Having the addition of a hot air balloon in the shape of soccer ball floating above the dam, patrons will be able to view the jazz festival as well as the dam from a bird's eye view.
"The support shown by music fans over the past years has been a testament to the desirability and relevance of this festival and it will continue to grow from strength to strength with improvements in the line-up, logistical preparation as well as the delivery of a musical experience that is unique to the picturesque nature of the region."
The event will also feature ethnic food booths, drinks and crafts that will be sold at the venue.
One designated satellite point of liquor sales will be clearly demarcated as beer gardens for adults only.
"As this is an event for the whole family there will be an enclosed child-care centre, with jumping castles andother entertainment for kids," Ngcobo said.
"Parents will be able to leave their kids with dedicated childminders for a fee so that they can enjoy themselves and have peace of mind knowing their children are taken care of."
