KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu on Friday commended 101 road traffic inspectorate officers during a passing-out parade in Pietermaritzburg.

The graduates, who underwent a gruelling six-month course, will be sent to various stations in the province.

The students did not only study theory but also learnt to man roadblocks, search vehicles and master other departmental duties.

"The province has since the beginning of December had 84 families who lost members in road accidents in the province," Mchunu said.

"Despite the dreadful figures, traffic officers are doing a great job out there, dealing with pedestrians, speedsters and reckless drunken divers.

"More 80000 vehicles have been stopped for various offences."
