Gunmen rob guards

AN INTENSE search is under way for six gunmen who robbed the SBV Security Guards of millions of rands while it was reloading ATMs in Mpumalanga.

The incident occurred at the busy Toska Shopping Complex in Middelburg on Friday morning, according to the police.

The SBV Security Guards had just loaded cash into an ATM at First National Bank at about 10am. While they were returning to their armoured vehicle they were confronted by three gunmen.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said the gunmen forced the guards into the armoured vehicle. Inside they held up two more guards and ordered the driver to drive away from the complex.

"They were followed by a white Opel Corsa and both vehicles stopped about a kilometer from the complex," he said.

The robbers were joined by the three occupants of the Opel Corsa and together they off-loaded cash from the armoured vehicle into their getaway car.

The Opel Corsa had reportedly been hijacked in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, last month.

Hlathi said the guards were left in their vehicle and the robbers took off in the direction of Extension 24, Nazareth, near Middelburg.

There they hijacked a silver BMW and abandoned the Opel Corsa with an R5 rifle belonging to the guards inside.
